Let's say the particular star that your focusing on is1500 light years away from you "the distant light travels in an entire year" so yes the star that your looking at is how the star was 1500 years ago. your essentially looking back in time. it's a very interesting imagine that if earth is viewed from 27 million light years away from earth then that viewer would see dinosaurs.
